In a little over 14 hours on the 19th of July, 1916 , 5533 Australian soldiers were killed or wounded, fighting for a stretch of muddy farmland near the German occupied town of Fromelles .
A disaster from the outset, these men (many of whom had survived the horrific fighting on Gallipoli) were needlessly sent to their deaths against a well fortified enemy of far superior numbers. It was a battle that should never have happened.
Combining expert commentary with the words of the soldiers themselves, July 19 provides a realistic portrayal of what happened, ensuring these brave “19th of July Men” are never forgotten and take their rightful place in our collective conscious.
