W.G. Graham
The story of William George Graham

William George Graham was born in Artarmon, a suburb of Sydney, and enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in June 1915, being assigned to the 18th battalion. A butcher by trade, 18 year-old Graham arrived in France in March 1916, being wounded less than a month later with a gunshot wound to the thigh.
He was out of action for close to three months, eventually rejoining his unit in August and serving with them through the remainder of 1916 and into 1917. However on May 6, 1917, Graham was killed by a shell near Menin Road, Ypres.
According to his Red Cross file his comrades buried him in a small roadside cemetery. He is now commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial as well as on his young sister’s grave in Sydney and on the Longueville Public School honour board.
